Spectroscopic studies of neutron-deficient light nuclei: decay properties of 21Mg, 25Si and 26P
2003
Neutron‐deficient nuclei with Tz equals to −3/2 and −2 have been produced at the GANIL/LISE3 facility in fragmentation reactions of a 95 MeV/u 36Ar primary beam in a 12C target. For the first time, β‐delayed proton and β‐γ emission has been simultaneously observed in the decay of 21Mg, 25Si and 26P. The decay scheme of the latter is proposed and the Gamow‐Teller strength distribution in its β decay is compared to shell‐model calculations based on the USD interaction. The B(GT) values derived from the absolute measurement of the β‐branching ratios are in agreement with the quenching factor of about 60% obtained for allowed Gamow‐Teller transitions in this mass region. A precise half‐life of …
Isovector and isoscalar spin-multipole giant resonances in the parent and daughter nuclei of double-β-decay triplets
2022
The strength distributions, including giant resonances, of isovector and isoscalar spin-multipole transitions in the commonly studied double-β-decay triplets are computed in the framework of the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) using the Bonn-A two-body interaction in no-core single-particle valence spaces. The studied nuclei include the double-β parent and daughter pairs (76Ge, 76Se), (82Se, 82Kr), (96Zr, 96Mo), (100Mo, 100Ru), (116Cd, 116Sn), (128Te, 128Xe), (130Te, 130Xe), and (136Xe, 136Ba). The studied transitions proceed from the ground states to the Jπ=0−,1−,2− (spin-dipole transitions) and Jπ=1+,2+,3+ (spin-quadrupole transitions) excited states in these nuclei. Compa…
Development of low-diffusion techniques for a high pressure xenon electroluminescent TPC
2022

Discovery potential of xenon-based neutrinoless double beta decay experiments in light of small angular scale CMB observations
2013
The South Pole Telescope (SPT) has probed an expanded angular range of the CMB temperature power spectrum. Their recent analysis of the latest cosmological data prefers nonzero neutrino masses, with Sigma m(nu) = (0.32 +/- 0.11) eV. This result, if con firmed by the upcoming Planck data, has deep implications on the discovery of the nature of neutrinos. In particular, the values of the effective neutrino mass m(beta beta) involved in neutrinoless double beta decay (beta beta 0 nu) are severely constrained for both the direct and inverse hierarchy, making a discovery much more likely. In this paper, we focus in xenon-based beta beta 0 nu experiments, on the double grounds of their good perfo…
Neutrino masses and their ordering: global data, priors and models
2018
We present a Bayesian analysis of the combination of current neutrino oscillation, neutrinoless double beta decay and CMB observations. Our major goal is to carefully investigate the possibility to single out one neutrino mass ordering, Normal Ordering or Inverted Ordering, with current data. Two possible parametrizations (three neutrino masses versus the lightest neutrino mass plus the two oscillation mass splittings) and priors (linear versus logarithmic) are examined. We find that the preference for NO is only driven by neutrino oscillation data. Moreover, the values of the Bayes factor indicate that the evidence for NO is strong only when the scan is performed over the three neutrino ma…
Double-beta-decay nuclear matrix elements in the QRPA framework
2012
We review the recent work done by the Jyväskylä-La Plata collaboration on the calculation of nuclear matrix elements for various modes of double-beta decays. Whenever helpful, we connect our recent work to the historical background in order to highlight the progress achieved in the field of double-beta decay. At the same time, we introduce some new concepts and ideas to treat e.g. possible backgrounds in Gamow-Teller strength functions generated in (p,n) and (n,p) reactions. © 2012 IOP Publishing Ltd. Searching for New Physics in two-neutrino double beta decay with CUPID
2021
Abstract In the past few years, attention has been drawn to the fact that a precision analysis of two-neutrino double beta decay (2υββ) allows the study of interesting physics cases like the emission of Majoron bosons and possible Lorentz symmetry violation. These processes modify the summed-energy distribution of the two electrons emitted in 2υββ. CUPID is a next-generation experiment aiming to exploit 100Mo-enriched scintillating Li2MoO4 crystals, operating as cryogenic calorimeters. Given the relatively fast half-life of 100Mo 2υββ and the large exposure that can be reached by CUPID, we expect to measure with very high precision the 100Mo 2υββ spectrum shape, reaching great sensitivities…
Can we measure the neutrino mass hierarchy in the sky?
2010
Cosmological probes are steadily reducing the total neutrino mass window, resulting in constraints on the neutrino-mass degeneracy as the most significant outcome. In this work we explore the discovery potential of cosmological probes to constrain the neutrino hierarchy, and point out some subtleties that could yield spurious claims of detection. This has an important implication for next generation of double beta decay experiments, that will be able to achieve a positive signal in the case of degenerate or inverted hierarchy of Majorana neutrinos. We find that cosmological experiments that nearly cover the whole sky could in principle distinguish the neutrino hierarchy by yielding 'substan…
Extracting information on the decays from the decays
2005
Abstract We have analyzed the relation between the two-neutrino ( 2 ν β β ) and neutrinoless ( 0 ν β β ) double beta decays of 76Ge, 82Se, 100Mo, and 116Cd. The relevant nuclear matrix elements have been calculated by using the proton–neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pn-QRPA) with realistic two-body interactions. The dependence of the calculated matrix elements on the strength g pp of the particle–particle part of the proton–neutron two-body interaction is investigated. Recently a procedure was proposed where data on 2 ν β β -decay half-lives could be used to derive appropriate values of g pp for calculating the 0 ν β β -decay matrix elements. Following this procedure, we h…
